Profile

The Rev. Dr. Lisa Allen-McLaurin is Helmar E. Nielsen Associate Professor of Church Music and Worship. Dr. Allen-McLaurin’s teaching interests include worship in the African-American context, spirituality and theology in worship, and gender issues in the Black Church. Her most recent book, Worship Matters! Essays on the Practical and Spiritual Discipline of Worship, was published in 2015. She is a contributing author to the forthcoming book, The Unity of the Church and Human Sexuality: Toward a Faithful United Methodist Witness (UMC General Board of Discipleship), the forthcoming book, Preach the Word: An Anthology of Sermons (CME Church), the recently published Womanist and Black Feminist Responses to Tyler Perry Productions (Palgrave McMillan, 2014), The Ships Continue to Sail: How to Navigate the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church during Stormy and Challenging Times (CME Church, 2014), and Companion to the Africana Worship Book (Discipleship Resources, 2008). She was a featured contributor to the Emmy-award winning documentary, Reflect, Reclaim, Rejoice: Preserving the Gift of Black Sacred Music (Discipleship Resources, 2015).
Dr. Allen-McLaurin’s current research projects include a monograph titled, OneWord: A New Paradigm for Worship Planning, which offers a model for worship planning that begins with the biblical text and advocates for a holistic approach, and Seven Psalms that Saved My Life, a devotional journal. She is a member of the American Academy of Religion and serves as Co-Chair of the Music Committee of the Sixth Episcopal District of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church. Dr. Allen-McLaurin is an ordained elder in the CME Church.
