Profile

The Rev. Dr. Reginaldo Paranhos Braga Jr is Associate Professor of Religion and Education. He teaches Religion and Education courses, the intersection of these fields, and the intersection of these fields with Christian theology. Courses that he teaches include Introduction to Religious Education, Sacred Texts and Religion and Education, Teaching and Learning, Critical Theory in Education, Conversations with Educational Theorists, Philosophy of Education, Educating in Faith in Latin America, Research Methods in Religion and Education and Research Practicum in Religion and Education. His areas of expertise include Critical Pedagogies, with focus on Paulo Freire, Latin American Theologies, and Critical Theory. His teaching and research interests include fostering educational practices that emphasize building selfhood through story linking, agency through epistemological, identity and relational competences, and social action through liberating and transforming practices of faith. He also coordinates the MA in Religion & Education Degree, with extensive program development in the research tracks of Congregational Ministries, Public Spaces & Public Theologies and, Teaching and Research in Education. His publications include “Práticas de Vida, Práticas de Fé, Práticas de Graça: Por uma Pedagogia do Cotidiano do Povo Brasileiro” in Carvalhaes, Cláudio, Teologia do Culto: Entre o Altar e o Mundo, Fonte Editorial: São Paulo, 2012; and articles in Interfaith Peace Walk: A Peace Primer, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Nyack, NY and “ “Confessing Grace: Lessons from the Diasporic Ambiguity on Epistemology, Identity and Relationality,” Copher Lecture, 2017 in the Journal of the Interdenomminational Theological Center (forthcoming).

His current research project is the translation and editing of seminal ITC faculty work into Portuguese language. Currently he is working on Dr. Jacqueline Grant’s White Women’s Christ and Black Women’s Jesus forthcoming to print in cooperation with ASTE Brazil and Faculdade Unida. He has initiated and facilitated the global and international studies initiative at ITC with educational partners in Brazil. His guild service includes co-chairing the Teaching and Learning Unit of the SECSOR/American Academy of Religion, Forum for Theological Exploration, and the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. He is also an ordained minister of the word and sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
